The police in Caracas said that the killing of a newspaper executive on Monday might have been a case of mistaken identity. Pierre Fould Gerges, 48, the vice president of Reporte de la Economía, a business newspaper, was killed by a gunman on a motorcycle who followed him after he left the newspaper’s headquarters in a car that belonged to his brother, Tanous Gerges, the newspaper’s president.
The police said they believed that the victim might have been mistaken for his brother, who had received death threats in recent weeks. Reporte de la Economía is known for denouncing cases of corruption in financial circles in Venezuela.
