Washington Post August 21, 2008 SANTA ELENA DE UAIREN, Venezuela -- Venezuelan and Brazilian troops are holding joint anti-drug exercises along their shared border. The drills are meant to train soldiers to identify planes used for smuggling illegal drugs. The soldiers are using a radar system that Venezuela recently acquired from China, along with military aircraft such as Brazilian-made Tucano planes and Cougar helicopters. Venezuelan air force Cmdr. Luis José Berroterán told journalists Wednesday that the exercises would last four days. The South American neighbors are major conduits for Colombian cocaine that is smuggled to the United States and Europe. |
